Why the Duke of York Has Surrendered His Official Honors – and the Implications for the Monarchy

In a statement released by the royal household, the king's brother has declared that he will be giving up his official honors, such as the Duke of York. Here are the details of what has been revealed – and what remains unchanged.

What Has the Prince Announced?

After previously withdrawn as a active member of the monarchy in 2019, the prince has currently chosen to “go a step further” and consent not to use the “honor or the awards which have been conferred upon” him.

He will not have wanted that trip to be marred by further adverse coverage about his brother.

What Has Been the Reaction?

While he said his sister had been “justified” by the decision, her sibling Sky Roberts informed a newspaper that Andrew’s honorary prince title ought to be removed for “genuine accountability” to be done.

The anti-monarchist advocacy organization Republic has also said the action is “too little, too late”, noting: “The prince continues to be facing allegations of sexual offences and abuse of office. He should be stripped of all titles and his military position and should face a legal probe. Refraining from using silly medieval titles is not a penalty that fits the offences.”
