White House Announces Federal Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Third Week

Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

Although Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.
