The Hornets Part Ways With Paulo Pezzolano Following a 10-Match Stint and Bring Back Javi Gracia as Head Coach

Watford Football Club have taken the move to end their manager's contract after just a brief period and 10 games in charge, announcing the return of former boss Javi Gracia as his successor.

It is understood that Pezzolano, appointed in the spring to replace the interim manager, along with his backroom team, were told not to take practice on Wednesday as rumors about his exit grew on the previous day.

Pezzolano was called to a discussion where he became the 11th manager Watford have let go since the start of the year 2020.

"We are delighted to welcome back Javi," said the club's chief executive. "His passion, guidance and well-defined plan will foster consistency, unity and positive energy.

"We are sure many fans who wished Javi had never departed in 2019. With this talented squad, we are certain his know-how and qualities are exactly what we require at this moment."

Gracia previously led Watford to the FA Cup showpiece for the only other occasion in the club's history in that year, but was sacked a few matches into the following campaign and most recently coached at Leeds in 2023.

"For me, the emotion I have right now is that I'm returning home. It was the happiest period of my professional life," he stated. "I have fond recollections and we have unfinished business here. For us, it's another important step in our career.

"This is something special for us, and at the same time we are highly motivated for this campaign. If we are united, we are stronger."

Pezzolano's sacking comes even after their win against Oxford United at their home ground on Saturday, which lifted them to 11th in the second tier after a slow start that earned a handful of points from the first six games.

Pezzolano is said to have left disappointed by the call to let him go, having led Watford to a three-match unbeaten run that featured a victory at home over Hull City and a tie at Fratton Park, placing them three points off the playoff places.

The coach joined soon after the conclusion of the previous campaign with a strong record of leading teams to advancement in Spain, Brazil and his home country.
