The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct personas, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, though other scenes show the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
