A shadow economy for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.
The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Followers are encouraged to contact these profiles directly for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.
Additionally, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with numerous of participants share “before and after” images, administration instructions and assertions of rapid British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for transactions.
Retatrutide is an investigational injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist individuals lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.
