Meteorologists are saying a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are expected to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," noted the Met Office.
In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. The mercury are forecast to be low, making extra layers essential, as per forecasters.
In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Heading into Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.
Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to affect the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials explained this meant the weather was likely to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
The guidance for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, preparing for winter conditions is completely key.
