Lando Norris Claims Debut F1 Drivers' Crown in Abu Dhabi Despite Max Verstappen's Grand Prix Win.

With a performance full of brave driving, Lando Norris has sealed his maiden F1 world title by taking a podium finish at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. A podium was enough for the British driver, even though his rival Max Verstappen won the race and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri finished in second.

Norris executed precisely what was needed in an extremely high-pressure race at the Yas Marina Circuit, including a number of audacious overtakes, with flawless execution from both himself and his team.

A Momentous Feat for Britain and The Team

With this his first world championship, Norris becomes the 11th British driver to achieve this. It concludes McLaren's drivers’ championship drought, which stretched back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was their last champion. Additionally, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the championship double back in 1998.

It signifies a stunning revival for the team, from a low point in the mid-2010s when they twice finished ninth in the standings. The revival has been helmed by boss Zak Brown and, more recently, by Andrea Stella, who has built an well-drilled outfit with a hugely competitive car.

A Tale of Two McLaren

For his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had led the championship for a large part of the campaign, there was clear disappointment at stumbling in the later races. A series of poor performances and some errors, including crashing out in Baku, were expensive. However, he finishes the season having shown he is also of champion caliber. To have been so fast in only his third year in F1, with multiple victories, remains a huge achievement.

Max Verstappen was also brilliant to force the fight down to the last race. The Dutchman did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the race victory, but having come back from a 104-point deficit mid-season, he fell just short of having enough to overhaul Norris, finishing just two points short.

Sealing the Deal with Ruthless Precision

Norris closed out his title with ruthless focus to take the crown that had been within reach but remained just out of grasp as McLaren struggled at the last two races. These included a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an questionable tactical decision in Qatar.

It was no little achievement for the driver in his seventh season in F1, all of them with McLaren. He stuck with the squad even during some difficult periods, convinced they would return to the top. That belief was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.

He has done a remarkable job to stick at his goal, keeping his composure and belief during periods under pressure. After losing the lead to Piastri earlier, he still worked at getting the most from what he could.

The Decisive Grand Prix

At the start, Verstappen held his first place through the first corner, but the three title leaders kept it clean. Piastri, starting on the hard tyre, was feisty and made a brilliant move to pass the outside of Norris to claim second place.

It showed the McLarens were allowed to fight, but left Norris under pressure from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The first round pit visits saw Norris come out into midfield traffic, but he overtook rivals within a lap and displayed great composure in his race craft.

During the race, he made an absolutely bravura move to overtake two cars at once, moving up to fourth and catching Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull told their driver to hold up Norris, which resulted in a breathtaking overtaking attempt where Norris went up the inside line, almost completely off the track.

This moment was looked at by the race officials, with a few nerve-wracking laps elapsing before a penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris was decided. This bold move unimpeded was vital to his title fight.

Contrasting Fortunes

As Norris became the first British driver to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in form between the two was pronounced. While the new generation battled over the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal ending to a difficult season with Ferrari.

His first season with the Scuderia had been met by excitement but has yielded what was easily his most challenging year ever, ending up sixth in the championship and failing to secure a podium. He has appeared jaded in the final rounds and will aim to rebuild over the off-season.
