Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at Nigerian School

Security breach at school
Schools in northern Nigeria have often been targeted for weapon-wielding factions

Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, according to police.

The criminal group breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.

The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their living quarters, according to a statement.

One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.

Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.

Area inhabitants informed journalists that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.

In the past few years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.

The attack in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, causing relatives in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they wait and hope for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Protection challenge in Nigeria's northern territories has escalated dramatically in recent months, with schools bearing the brunt of the unrest.
