Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
