Periodic fasting seems unlikely to reduce a person’s cognitive performance during intervals when they are not eating, according to a new study.
Experts indicate in their digital publication, released in scientific journal, that brief fasting of less than 24 hours does not impact the mental performance of adults.
"People often worry that if they fast they will be unable to pay attention at work or learn efficiently," said a cognitive expert via announcement. "This research show that, for most adults, brief fasting is improbable to have a major impact on cognitive performance," the expert continued.
Researchers pointed out that minors and youth did exhibit some reduction of mental capabilities while fasting. That supported the importance of having a proper breakfast before school.
In addition, the scientists noted that adults who fast tend to score lower in tests in the afternoon. They proposed the food deprivation may intensify normal fluctuations in circadian rhythm.
"Humans evolved with times of dietary shortage, so it makes sense our mental processes can function well without constant refueling," the scientist stated. "However, children and teenagers tend to be more vulnerable, which corresponds to what we recognize about their elevated metabolic requirements."
The systematic study comprised 63 research projects from internationally, featuring more than 3,400 individuals.
Most participants typically fasted for between 8 hours and 24 hours, with a median abstinence interval of 12 hours.
The researchers determined that fasting "neither enhances nor impairs brain power." They did observe three elements that can impact cognitive sharpness:
Notably, researchers pointed out that individuals tend to achieve poorer results on cognitive assessments near the completion of their fasting period.
"These findings indicate that although many people can be reassured about brief fasting impacting their mental sharpness, implementation across particular groups and contexts may require more careful consideration," the researchers wrote.
Experts noted that energy reserve, the primary accumulated type of glucose, functions as the chief fuel source for individuals who eat regularly throughout the day.
They said glycogen levels may drop while a subject is fasting, but the physiology finds alternative fuel sources, including ketones, that are produced from adipose tissue.
"This metabolic flexibility likely supported survival during periods of dietary limitation, especially before the development of effective food preservation methods," the researchers commented.
The experts declared that this ancient evolutionary trait in the biological system still benefits people well.
"Evolutionary research and developmental concepts propose that humans developed increased adipose retention ability as an biological adjustment to resource fluctuations," the scientists elaborated.
"This power bank not just facilitated daily metabolic demands but also allowed the continuous evolution and expansion of the cerebrum, which demands considerable fuel supply," they added.
